Smokey is somewhat of a miracle kitty!
Smokey picked me out when I went to the Humane Society of Utah in late November of 2004. I was walking through the cat room full of cages with kittens in them. Smokey is the only one that caught my attention. As soon as I walked passed he put his little paw out through the cage reaching for me and meowing with the most pathetic sad meow I've ever heard. I couldn't resist.
After getting Smokey home he got really sick. He wouldn't eat and was very lethargic and stuffed up. The humane society gave me some antibiotics to give him, but they didn't help. So after he didn't eat for two days I got really worried and took him to the Cottonwood animal hospital. They found that he had a really bad case of cat flu, which is common at places like the humane society. They weren't sure if he was going to make it because he wouldn't eat and they couldn't get him to respond.
They actually asked me if I wanted him put to sleep to put him out of his misery. I asked if that was the only option cause I was already getting a bit attached to him. They said they could put him on an IV so he gets nutrients and pump him full of antibiotics and see if he pulls through, but that it wouldn't be cheap. I told them to save him.
Smokey spent 5 days at the clinic and it was touch and go for a couple of those days, but the little bugger pulled through. He was so tiny and skinny from not eating when I got him home. I had to give him drugs and nose spray for another week after I got him home, but he finally started eating. He then grew so fast and got so much more energetic!
Now he's a very healthy happy kitty, although a bit overweight! |
